Shabbat timer installation

A Shabbat timer lets the house run itself from candle lighting to Havdalah: hall and landing lights that come on and go off on their own, a hot plate and urn on a timed socket, and sensor lights that stay quiet. Fitted properly, it is set once and then adjusted a couple of times a year as the clocks change.

Hard-wired timers on lighting circuits

The neatest solution for hall, stair, landing and kitchen lights is a programmable timer wired into the lighting circuit — in the consumer unit, in a cupboard or behind the switch plate — with a manual override so the lights work normally the rest of the week. Digital timers hold a weekly programme, so the Friday evening and Saturday times can differ from the rest of the week.

Timed sockets for the hot plate and urn

  • A dedicated socket on its own timer for the plata or hot plate and the urn, so nothing is switched by hand.
  • Sized for the load — an urn and a hot plate together draw more than most people expect.
  • Plug-in timers are fine for lamps; for the kitchen we recommend a wired timed socket.

PIR and sensor lights

Motion-sensor lights in hallways, bathrooms, porches and gardens are the usual problem. We fit an override switch so each sensor light can be set to permanently on, permanently off or automatic, and we can put outdoor lights on a timer instead.

Fridge lights, ovens and smart systems

Fridge door switches, oven Sabbath modes and smart-lighting schedules all have their place. Practice varies between households and communities, so we fit what you ask for and leave the halachic questions to you and your rabbi.

FAQs

Shabbat timer installation — your questions

Is a hard-wired Shabbat timer a big job?
No — usually a couple of hours per circuit, including setting the programme with you. Several circuits can be done in a morning.
Will the timers need resetting when the clocks change?
Digital timers keep the clock, but Shabbat times shift through the year, so most households adjust the programme a few times a season. We show you how, and it takes a minute.
Can you do this in a rented flat?
Yes, with the landlord’s agreement for anything wired in. Plug-in timers need no permission at all.
